Last Thursday, seven members of Friendship Force Georgetown and their guests attended the Horse Cavalry Detachment demonstration at Ft Hood. The 30 minute mounted drill and weapons demonstration opened with the firing of a cannon.
The eleven troopers and their mounts and a mule-skinner, swamper and mascot dog with an escort wagon were assisted by a dedicated ground crew. They faithfully represented the tradition, techniques and tactics of the US Army during the Indian Wars.
Afterward we were given a tour of the barns where we learned about the unit's history and traditions. Everyone enjoyed meeting many of the horses and mules, seeing the horse shoeing facility and the leather shop.
